Keurig Not Pumping Water? Airlock, Clog and Pump Fixes (Every Model)

Humming, sputtering or no water at all? The official fixes from Keurig's own guides, including the model-specific purge buttons most articles miss.

You press brew and your Keurig hums, gurgles or sputters, but little or no water comes out. It’s frustrating, but in most cases the pump itself is fine: something between the reservoir and the pod is blocking the water, or there’s air in the line.

Below are the fixes in the order worth trying, based on Keurig’s own use-and-care guides, plus the model-specific steps most articles miss. Where a popular trick isn’t something Keurig recommends, we say so.

What the symptoms mean

What you see Most likely cause Start with
Won’t brew at all (K-Mini, K-Slim, K-Supreme) Not enough water. These brewers need at least 6 oz to brew Fix 1
“Add Water” light stays on after filling Reservoir not seated properly Fix 2
Short cup, slow brew, sputtering Grounds in the needles, or scale buildup Fixes 3 and 5
Hums but nothing comes out Air in the line or a blockage in the water path Fixes 3, 4 and 6
Little output with air blowing out after descaling Heavy scale; the brewer “may not fill properly” Fix 5

Fix 1: Check the minimum fill (single-serve fill models)

Keurig’s single-cup-fill brewers (K-Mini, K-Slim, K-Supreme, K-Supreme Plus) need at least 6 oz of water to brew. If yours “won’t brew”, Keurig’s guidance is to add another 2 oz and press brew again, repeating until it dispenses.

Fix 2: Reseat the reservoir

  1. Lift the reservoir off and fill it to the MAX line, but not past it.
  2. Check the opening underneath and the spot it sits on for grit or scale.
  3. Set it back down firmly. On a K-Classic, make sure the lock tabs engage fully.
  4. If you took the reservoir off mid-brew, run a water-only rinsing brew (no pod) before your next cup.

If the “Add Water” light still won’t go off after a proper refill and reseat, Keurig says to contact Customer Service.

Fix 3: Clean the entrance and exit needles

Coffee grounds (or hot-cocoa mix) lodged in the needles are one of the most common reasons for short or failed brews. Keurig’s own method uses a straightened paper clip:

  1. Unplug the brewer. The needles are sharp; keep your fingers out of the pod holder.
  2. Exit needle: remove the pod holder, detach the funnel, and push the paper clip up into the exit needle to loosen grounds. Rinse it.
  3. Entrance needle: hold the handle up and insert the paper clip into the holes around the needle in the lid. There are two holes on the K-Slim and K-Mini, three on the K-Duo Essentials, and multiple needles on the K-Supreme models.
  4. Reassemble, plug in, and run two water-only brews.

Keurig 2.0 brewers came with an orange Brewer Maintenance Accessory that does the entrance-needle job. Current models’ guides just call for a paper clip.

Fix 4: Purge the air (model-specific)

Several current models have an official button combination that pushes water through the system. It’s the closest thing to a built-in “unclog” button.

  • K-Slim, K-Supreme, K-Supreme Plus: power the brewer off, then press and hold Brew + 12 oz for 5 seconds until water starts to dispense. Let it purge, discard the water, and power back on.
  • K-Mini: press Power, then press and hold Brew for 5 seconds until all the water has dispensed. Discard it and power back on.

Fix 5: Descale

Mineral scale narrows the brewer’s internal water path over time. Keurig recommends descaling every 3 months (some newer guides say every 3 to 6), or when the descale light comes on. Follow our full guide: How to descale a Keurig.

A heavily scaled brewer can stop filling properly during descaling. If you get little output and hear air blowing out, Keurig’s guidance is to unplug it, discard the descaler, rinse and refill the reservoir with fresh water, and restart the rinse. If it still won’t cooperate, leave it unplugged for at least 30 minutes before continuing.

Worth keeping on hand

Keurig Descaling Solution

Keurig

If your brewer is sputtering and you can’t remember when you last descaled, start here. Keurig’s guides say that if you’ve descaled twice and still get partial cups, it’s time to contact Customer Service.

What we like

  • Keurig's own descaler
  • One bottle is one full descale (the K-Mini uses about a third)
  • No lingering vinegar smell

Keep in mind

  • Pricier than generic citric-acid descalers

Fix 6: The straw or turkey-baster trick (unofficial)

You’ll find this all over forums: remove the reservoir, then blow through a straw into the intake where the tank sits (or push water in with a turkey baster) to clear an airlock. Some owners swear by it.

Is the pump dead?

Keurig doesn’t publish a consumer test for pump failure. Its rule of thumb is to repeat a fix (such as descaling) twice, and if the problem persists, contact Customer Service. As a rough guide from owners and repair forums: if the pump hums, the motor is usually running and the problem is a blockage or airlock rather than the pump itself.

Warranty and support

  • Keurig brewers have a limited one-year warranty (US and Canada) covering defects in materials and workmanship.
  • Call Keurig Customer Service first. You’ll need a Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) number before sending a brewer in, and proof of purchase date.
  • Phone: 1-866-901-BREW (2739), 7 days a week. Live chat and email are also available at support.keurig.com.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Keurig humming but not pumping water?

A humming pump usually means the motor is running but water can’t get through: typically an airlock, grounds in the needles, or scale in the water path. Reseat the reservoir, clean both needles, try your model’s purge combination, and descale.

How do I get air out of my Keurig?

On K-Slim and K-Supreme models, power off and hold Brew + 12 oz for 5 seconds to purge. On a K-Mini, press Power, then hold Brew for 5 seconds. On other models, reseat a full reservoir and run several water-only brews.

Why won't my Keurig K-Mini brew?

The K-Mini needs at least 6 oz of water. Add another 2 oz and press brew again. If it still won’t brew, clean the needles and descale.

Can I use distilled water in my Keurig?

Keurig advises against distilled water and recommends bottled or filtered water instead.
