How to Clean Keurig Needles (K-Supreme, K-Mini, K-Slim and More)
Packed grounds in the needles are the #1 reason a Keurig brews nothing. Model-by-model steps, including the K-Supreme's angled five-needle head.
If you press brew and nothing comes out, or you get half a cup, the most likely culprit is also the cheapest to fix: coffee packed into the needles. Owners and repair techs alike are often surprised how hard wet grounds can set inside those tiny holes.
Every Keurig K-Cup brewer has two sets of needles:
- the entrance needle(s) in the lid, which punch the foil and inject hot water, and
- the exit needle in the pod holder, which pierces the bottom of the pod so coffee can drain out.
All you need is a straightened paper clip, a towel and a sink.
Step 1: Clean the exit needle
- Lift the handle and remove the pod holder. On most models, push up on it from underneath and it pops free.
- Many pod holders come apart into two pieces. On the K-Supreme family, grip the funnel and the holder and pull them apart; they snap off two small tabs.
- Push the paper clip up into the exit needle from the bottom, working it around to break up packed grounds.
- Wash both pieces in warm, soapy water and rinse well, running water through the needle.
- Snap the pieces back together and reinstall the holder. On the K-Supreme, the “caution: sharp needles” text should face you, and the holder should sit flush.
Step 2: Clean the entrance needle(s)
This is where most clogs hide, and where models differ the most.

Don’t push too far. Past the needle tip is a plastic tube, and a stiff wire can puncture it. A few millimeters in, wiggled around, is enough.
Step 3: Flush it through
Close the lid with no pod in place and run two water-only brews on a medium size (8 oz). Keurig recommends two. If you see bits of grounds in the rinse water, it’s working. A stubborn clog can take several rounds of paper clip plus rinse, so don’t give up after one.
How often should you clean the needles?
- Every brew: take the used pod out. A pod left in overnight lets damp grounds work up into the entrance needle, one of the most common causes of a sudden “it stopped working.”
- Weekly: a water-only brew, or a Keurig rinse pod. Keurig says rinse pods clean the brew chamber and exit needle, though they don’t replace a paper clip for a real clog.
- Monthly, or at the first short cup: the full paper-clip clean above. Do it more often if you use reusable pods, hot cocoa pods, or finely ground coffee.
