How to Descale a Keurig (Every Model) + What to Do When the Light Won’t Turn Off

Descaling is the single most useful thing you can do for a Keurig. Over time, minerals in tap water (mostly calcium and magnesium) build up as scale inside the heater and water lines. That buildup is behind a lot of common complaints: smaller cups, slower brews, lukewarm coffee, a “Prime” message that won’t go away, and coffee that tastes flat or chalky.

The process takes about 45 minutes, most of which is waiting. Here’s how to do it on any Keurig K-Cup brewer, plus what to do when the descale light won’t turn off afterward.

How often should you descale a Keurig?

Keurig’s guides recommend descaling every 3 months (a few newer models say every 3 to 6 months), or whenever the descale light comes on. Stick to 3 months if you have hard water, brew several cups a day, or see white crust around the reservoir. Many newer models show a “Descale” light or message when it’s time.

What you’ll need

  • A descaling solution. Keurig Descaling Solution is the manufacturer’s choice. Any citric-acid descaler made for coffee machines also works.
  • Fresh water for rinsing (about 12 reservoir-fulls’ worth of brews).
  • A large mug (at least 10 oz) and a sink nearby.

Step-by-step: how to descale a Keurig

  1. Prepare the brewer. Empty the reservoir, remove any pod, and take out the water filter if your reservoir has one. The descaler can damage the filter.
  2. Add the descaler. For Keurig Descaling Solution, pour the entire bottle into the reservoir, then fill the empty bottle with fresh water and add that too. For other descalers, follow the dilution on the label.
  3. Run cleansing brews. Put a large mug on the drip tray, and run water-only brews on the largest cup size, emptying the mug into the sink each time. Keep going until the brewer asks for more water.
  4. Let it sit. Leave the brewer on (not unplugged) for 30 minutes so the solution can dissolve scale inside the heater.
  5. Rinse thoroughly. Empty and rinse the reservoir well, fill it to the MAX line with fresh water, and run at least 12 water-only brews on the largest size. Refill the reservoir as needed.
  6. Put the filter back (or install a fresh one) and brew as normal.

Descale light won’t turn off?

This is one of the most common Keurig questions. Try these fixes in order:

  • Finish the full cycle. On models that track descaling, the light usually resets only after a complete descale that ends with a full reservoir of rinse water. Stopping partway through can leave it on.
  • Use your model’s descale mode if it has one. Brewing the solution through normal brew cycles on these models may not tell the brewer that you descaled.
  • Run a second descale. If scale was heavy, one pass may not clear it, and some brewers keep the reminder on until water flows normally again.
  • Power-cycle the brewer. Unplug it for a few minutes, then plug it back in and run a water-only brew.

Keurig’s own rule of thumb: if you’ve descaled twice and still have problems, contact Customer Service at 1-866-901-BREW (2739) with your model and serial number.

Keeping scale away

  • Use filtered water if your tap water is hard. A pitcher filter or the reservoir cartridge also improves taste.
  • Replace the reservoir filter on schedule. Follow the interval on the filter packaging (commonly about every two months).
  • Empty the reservoir if you won’t use the brewer for a few days, so water doesn’t sit and leave deposits.
  • Skip distilled water. Keurig’s guides advise against it and recommend bottled or filtered water instead.

How long does it take to descale a Keurig?

About 45 minutes in total: roughly 10 minutes of brewing the solution, a 30-minute wait, then about 10–15 minutes of fresh-water rinse brews.

Can I use vinegar to descale my Keurig?

White vinegar does remove scale, but it can leave a lingering smell, and Keurig recommends its own descaling solution. A citric-acid descaler made for coffee machines is a good middle ground.

What happens if I never descale my Keurig?

Scale keeps building up inside the heater and water lines. Over time that means smaller, cooler, slower cups, “Prime” or “Add water” errors, and eventually pump problems that may not be fixable.

Do I need to remove the water filter before descaling?
