Nespresso Vertuo Blinking Lights: Every Pattern Decoded, by Model
Orange, red, green or white, fast or slow: what your Vertuo's light is telling you and how to fix it, straight from Nespresso's manuals.
Vertuo machines communicate almost entirely through one light, and the same color can mean different things depending on how fast it blinks and which model you own. An orange light on a Vertuo Next means something different from an orange light on a VertuoPlus.
We went through Nespresso’s official user manuals for every Vertuo model and pulled out what each pattern means and what Nespresso says to do about it. Find your model below.
Vertuo Next and Vertuo Pop
Nespresso uses one light table for both machines.

Fixing the error light (2 blinks, pause)
- Unlock and open the head. Check there’s a fresh, undamaged capsule sitting in the correct position.
- Close the head and make sure the handle is fully locked (turned left).
- Check the water tank is filled.
- If the light keeps flashing: open the head, replace the capsule, unplug for 10 seconds, plug back in, close and lock, press to turn on, then press again to brew.
- If it still won’t clear, contact Nespresso.
If you see the error during descaling, emptying or cleaning, check that the capsule has been ejected and the handle is locked.
Stuck in descaling mode?
The manual’s troubleshooting page says to push the button, and if the machine is still blinking, hold the button for at least 7 seconds to exit descaling mode. Be aware that Nespresso’s own documents disagree here: the descaling instructions in the same manual (and the 2024 edition) say descaling “cannot be interrupted,” and that if you unplug mid-cycle the machine restarts in descale mode and both the descaling and rinse cycles must be repeated. In practice, if the 7-second hold doesn’t work, the fastest way out is to finish the cycle. Here’s how to descale your Vertuo.
Vertuo Pop+
The Pop+ manual doesn’t print a full light table (it points to a video), but it confirms these:
- Orange 3 times, then steady white: descaling needed.
- 1 blink and 1 pause: fill the water tank and check the lever is locked.
- 2 blinks and 1 pause: an error. Use the same capsule, lever and water checks as the Next above, then unplug for 10 seconds.
- Turquoise blinking: not a fault. The brew is set to concentrated (recipe) mode.
VertuoPlus and VertuoPlus Deluxe
The VertuoPlus uses a green, red and orange light ring.

Original VertuoLine (GCA1)
The first-generation Vertuo has a single-color button light, so patterns are about speed, not color. Nespresso’s manual describes almost the same patterns as the Vertuo Next: steady means ready, one long on / short off means the tank is empty, two quick blinks plus a long pause means an error, fast triple blinking means descaling or emptying, and five slow blinks confirm a factory reset. To exit descaling mode, hold the button for at least 7 seconds.
Vertuo Lattissima, Creatista and Up
- Vertuo Lattissima: the descale alert blinking orange means descale soon. Fast orange blinking means only a few recipes are left before the machine blocks itself. Hot foam, latte macchiato and cappuccino buttons blinking together mean the water tank is empty; blinking alternately means it has overheated and needs to cool.
- Vertuo Creatista: steady white means ready, and the descaling light blinking orange means it’s time to descale. Two red blinks and a pause on the coffee button calls for the same capsule, handle and water checks as the Next.
- Vertuo Up: a steady orange maintenance button means descaling is needed. A blinking blue, orange or yellow coffee button means a maintenance program is running, so leave the machine alone until it finishes.
How to reset a Vertuo to factory settings
- Next, Pop, Pop+, VertuoLine: open the head to eject the capsule, close it but leave the handle unlocked, then press the button 5 times within 3 seconds.
- VertuoPlus: turn off (hold the lever down 3 s), press the button and lever down together for 3 s (steady orange), press the lever 3 times, then press the button to confirm.
- Vertuo Creatista: press and hold the Milk Temperature button for 10 seconds.
- Vertuo Up: open the lever and turn on, then hold Coffee + Maintenance for at least 10 seconds. This also unpairs the machine from the app.
A factory reset clears your custom cup volumes, and on connected models it turns Bluetooth or Wi-Fi back on.
