Keurig Says “Add Water” When It’s Full? How to Fix It

Why the Add Water light stays on with a full tank, the five fixes to try, and why it can also stop your descale light from ever clearing.

You’ve filled the reservoir to the top, but your Keurig still insists you “Add Water.” It’s one of the most frustrating Keurig faults because the fix can be trivial or impossible to reach. This problem can also stop the descale light from ever turning off (more on that below).

Keurig’s own guidance is short: fill to the MAX line (not past it), make sure the reservoir is seated properly in its base, and contact Customer Service if the light stays on. Here’s everything worth trying before that call.

1. Seat the reservoir properly

This is the fix most of the time.

  1. Lift the reservoir off and fill it to MAX, not above.
  2. Check the base for anything that stops the tank sitting flat: a stray coffee ground, a crumb, or grit in the track the tank slides into.
  3. Set it straight down and press gently until it settles. On a K-Classic, make sure the lock tabs engage.
  4. Look at it from the side. Some tanks can look seated while resting a few millimeters high.
The reservoir's valve (bottom) and the socket it sits in on the base. Debris on either one can keep the tank from seating fully.

2. Clean the reservoir and its valve

Scale, algae or gunk around the valve can confuse the water-level reading. Empty the reservoir, wash it with a drop of dish soap, and use a cotton swab around the valve and in the corners. Rinse thoroughly, since soap residue can foam. While it’s empty, press the valve from underneath to make sure it moves freely.

3. Check for a stuck float (reservoirs that have one)

Some Keurig reservoirs have a small float that rides up and down with the water level. If it’s stuck, scaled up, or was put back upside down after washing, the brewer thinks the tank is empty. Make sure it slides freely. Keurig’s manuals don’t cover this part, but it’s a common fix among owners.

4. Look for a blocked vent

Repair technicians point out that the water-level sensing on many Keurigs relies on a small air vent: water has to rise and fall in a sensing chamber, and trapped air stops it. On older models like the K-Classic and K-Select, the vent is a small hole you can see on the base with the reservoir removed. Dust, a coffee ground, or even an insect can block it. If you can see it, clear it gently with a puff of air or a soft brush.

On newer models the vent is inside the brewer, so leave that one to Keurig.

5. Do a power reset

Turn the brewer off, unplug it, remove the reservoir and wait at least 30 minutes. Power back on, then seat a full reservoir. Full steps: how to reset a Keurig.

Why this also breaks descaling

On brewers with a descale mode, the brewer appears to need to see the reservoir run empty (the Add Water light coming on) during the process before it counts the descale as finished. If the Add Water sensor isn’t working properly, or you keep topping the tank up mid-cycle, the descale light can stay on no matter how many times you descale. Fix the Add Water problem first, then descale again and let each stage run until the brewer asks for water.

When to call Keurig

If the light stays on with a properly seated, clean, full reservoir after a reset, Keurig’s advice is to contact Customer Service: 1-866-901-BREW (2739), 7 days a week. Brewers carry a limited one-year warranty. Have your model and serial number (on the bottom of the brewer) ready.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Keurig say add water when it's full?

Usually the reservoir isn’t seated fully, the valve or reservoir is dirty, or a float is stuck. Fill to MAX, clean the reservoir and valve, reseat it firmly, and do a power reset. If it persists, contact Keurig.

Can the Add Water light stop my descale light from turning off?

It can. Brewers with a descale mode appear to need to register an empty reservoir during descaling. If the Add Water sensor isn’t working, the descale light may stay on.

Should I overfill the reservoir to make the light go off?

No. Keurig says to fill to the MAX line but not past it.
