Every Vertuo machine brews the same pods the same way: it reads a barcode on each capsule and sets the brew automatically. So the differences between models come down to which cup sizes they can make, how big the water tank is, how fast they heat up, and how much counter space they take. Price matters too, and it swings a lot with sales.

What the cup sizes mean
Vertuo pods come in set sizes: espresso (1.35 oz), double espresso (2.7 oz), gran lungo (5 oz), mug (7.77 oz), alto (12 oz) and carafe (18 oz). A machine that doesn’t support a size simply can’t brew those pods, so check before you buy a box.
- Pop+ brews everything except the 18 oz carafe pods.
- VertuoPlus tops out at the 8 oz mug. No alto or carafe pods.

Other Vertuo models
- VertuoPlus: the older model with a motorized head. It’s out of stock on nespresso.com, though De’Longhi still sells it for about $199. With only four cup sizes and a slower heat-up, the Next or Up is a better buy today.
- Vertuo Creatista (Breville, about $525 on sale, reg. $700): a Vertuo with a real steam wand for barista-style milk, a 67 oz tank and all six sizes. For people who want to texture their own milk.
- Original Vertuo (“Chrome”): still sold as a $269.99 bundle with an Aeroccino frother, but it only brews four sizes. Newer models are better value.
- Vertuo Pop (original): largely replaced by the Pop+ at Nespresso. It brews four sizes.
Which Vertuo should you buy?
- On a budget, or short on counter space: Vertuo Pop+.
- Want every cup size for the least money: Vertuo Next.
- Hate waiting, or brew a lot: Vertuo Up.
- Mostly lattes and cappuccinos: Vertuo Lattissima, or any model plus an Aeroccino frother.
Whichever you pick, remember that third-party pods don’t work in Vertuo machines. Only Nespresso’s pods (and Starbucks by Nespresso Vertuo) do.
