Techlicious Tries the $500 Keurig Alta: Its Pods Cost More Than Nespresso’s
Keurig’s $499.99 Alta is on sale now, and Techlicious got a hands-on session before launch. The headline for most pod owners: the machine still brews regular K-Cups, so your current stash isn’t wasted. The catch is what the new AltaRounds cost.
Per Techlicious, AltaRounds run $10.99 for a box of eight, or $9.99 for the Single Shot espresso. That works out to about $1.37 a round, or $1.25 for a Single Shot, against the roughly 90 cents the outlet pegs for a Nespresso Original capsule. Keurig’s AutoRefresh subscription takes $1.50 off each box. The $499.99 price includes four boxes, and for now the Alta is only sold at KeurigAlta.com, with stores to follow over the coming months.
The rounds themselves are pressed coffee in a seaweed-based coating that Keurig says is certified compostable. Techlicious points out that each round still comes in its own foil wrapper that isn’t recyclable; Keurig says it plans to switch to recyclable paper wrappers in 2027. The brewer reads a code on each round to set pressure and temperature, offers both an automatic frother and a manual steam wand, and needs a lot of room: about 19 inches deep, with nearly 17 inches of clearance to open the pod compartments.
Techlicious liked the frothing options but found the Double Shot espresso a bit bitter and burnt, though it noted the crema was thick. Peet’s rounds are expected, likely early in 2027, according to a Keurig rep.
Our take: if you’re curious, there’s no rush. Launch pricing, one retailer and a short menu of rounds all tend to improve. Our Keurig Alta and AltaRounds explainer covers what’s official, and if pod cost is your worry, compare it with what a regular Keurig costs per cup.
