Nespresso’s own capsules are excellent, but at around a dollar each they add up fast. The good news for Nespresso Original owners (Essenza, Pixie, CitiZ, Inissia, Lattissima and similar) is that plenty of other coffee brands make capsules that fit your machine, often for a lot less.

Lavazza gets the balance right: a genuinely good Italian espresso, a lineup that covers everything from a gentle lungo to an intense ristretto, and aluminum capsules that behave like Nespresso’s own. Café Bustelo’s capsules bring its famous strong, dark espresso to your Nespresso for about 70 cents a pod. It’s a one-note coffee, but it’s a good note, especially with steamed milk and sugar.

Do third-party capsules void your Nespresso warranty?

Not by themselves. Nespresso’s US warranty (one year) has no clause about using other brands’ capsules. It excludes things like misuse, accidents and negligence. After a 2014 case with French competition authorities, Nespresso agreed to stop tying its warranties to its own capsules. In the US, federal warranty law (the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act) generally prevents a company from voiding a warranty just because you used another brand’s parts or supplies.

The one caveat: if a faulty capsule actually damages the machine, that damage may not be covered.

Known fit issues

  • L’OR XXL (double) capsules don’t fit Nespresso Original. They’re only for L’OR’s own Barista machines. Regular L’OR capsules fit fine.
  • Plastic capsules can make the lever stiffer. Gourmesso, for example, warns its plastic capsules can make the lever “a little more difficult to operate,” and says it won’t damage the machine.
  • When in doubt, choose aluminum. It behaves most like Nespresso’s own capsules. Every top pick above is aluminum.
  • Commercial Nespresso machines (Nespresso Professional) use a different capsule and aren’t compatible.

Can I use non-Nespresso pods in a Vertuo?

No. Vertuo machines only work with Nespresso’s barcoded Vertuo pods. Starbucks by Nespresso Vertuo pods are the one exception, because they’re made with Nespresso.

Will compatible pods damage my Nespresso?

Well-made aluminum capsules from established brands are designed to work like Nespresso’s own. Some plastic capsules can make the lever feel stiffer. Avoid L’OR XXL capsules, which don’t fit Original machines.
